I'm Sick of FAT!

I just started the Couch to 5k program last week. If you aren't familiar with it you can check it out here. The end goal is to be able to run a 5K (3.1 miles) in 9 weeks. To some of you that's probably no big deal...to me it's a HUGE goal. I've never been athletic or a runner by any stretch of the imagination. Even in high school when I was my most fit, running a mile without stopping was hard. I'd like to have all of you as accountability to sticking to this program. I'll try to share my runs each week. Here is last week.

{i'm slow but i'm not on the couch!}

Yes I WANT to lose weight but I'm not calling this my weight loss journey. I'm calling it my healthy journey. My husband is joining me and he by no means needs to lose weight but he does want to be healthy. I've not only started working out but I've started eating healthy and counting calories. I started using an app called My Fitness Pal. It's free you should download it! It even allows you to scan the UPC code so that you have all of the nutritional contents of what you are eating. It's seriously addicting to enter in your caloric intake. Yes it takes time but it's well worth it when you realize how many calories you are consuming.

Last week I read an incredibly disturbing article about obesity in churches. Crazy right? We don't normally talk about that in church! {we do talk about it at Revolution Church} The article talks about how churches are contributing to the obesity epidemic in America. How is this possible? God clearly talks about our bodies being temples yet a study found that "young adults who attend church or a bible study once a week are 50% more likely to be obese". THAT IS NUTSO!!!! It's probably because the traditional church like I grew up in LOVES a potluck! I mean come on? Who doesn't? Also because it can hurt someones feelings to talk about being overweight if you are overweight. I think it's about time to start "hurting feelings". We have to make changes if we want to live!

I'm sick of the fat. Not just the fat in my body but the fat of life. The fatty junk that no one needs. It's time to get through the fat to the meat of life and the meat of THE Word.

I truly believe that the health of our physical body is directly related to the health of our spiritual body. This past week I've felt more in tune with God. My attitude towards my husband was better. I wanted to get out and be active with my VERY active little girl. My worship on Sunday was more energized!

I hope this encourages you to start taking steps to being healthy!

Don't just stalk my blog! Leave comments let me know what you do to stay fit. Leave me any running tips you have PLEASE! I need them!

(side note while i'm writing this Ella is watching Yo Gabba Gabba and there is a kid playing the recorder with her nose....weird)

  1. congrats Mallory! I'm not exactly training for a 5k, but I have been working towards running more and improving my time! All the way around my block and into the side streets is 1.3 miles for me. I started run/walking it in 21 minutes, now I'm down to 17! Slowly but surely!

I've found that picking a "milestone" and saying "If I can just run to that light post" and then "okay, maybe the next lamp post" I an push myself just a little bit farther.

    Slowly but surely!

    1. That's great! Thanks for the tip! It's a good idea. I'll try it on my next run and let you know how it goes. I'm seriously slow and SERIOUSLY out of shape but hey you have to start somewhere! I'm right about where you were when you started. Run/walking in about 20min. Hoping to get to 17 soon!

  2. I'm so happy you blogged about this!! I had this thought on sunday that I'm tired of it, something got to change! Its time to get serious. Sunday was just a breaking point for me. I have tried before and failed but I'm ready for a NEW start!! I have been biking, which I love, been losing inches!! (guess thats a start) I have the fitness pal. We should follow each other for accountability I know I need that...FutureFewox (name was picked to help with motivation). Do you still count when going out to eat?? Its so hard to live a healthy life style when the people around dont want the same! So thank you for doing this it helps alot, that I can do something!! I have to do better for God and myself. I think what your doing is awesome Mal! Keep it up!!

    1. Thanks Miranda! I know you can do it! I will definitely find you on the App. I only have J as a friend right now and he's no fun because he gets to eat a lot of calories haha! Biking is great. I've seen your post about it. Keep it up. Plus you have such a cute bike and a friend to ride with ;)

  3. Man, God is stirring it up! Brian was convicted of the same stuff Sunday and said "I'm not gonna not say something! Someone has to say it" and then I went to the "feelings" issue by saying he should address it from a personal stand point!
Another aspect about within the church could also be that "addiction" with other stuff is an OBVIOUS issue but no one will address food addiction and it's rampant....and so much worse and harder to deal with! You HAVE TO eat! You can stay out of the bars, the liquor store, change friends etc but food you can't get away from! Brian is in beast mode too! I'm working on doing SOMETHING everyday! I can't do a lot....BUT I'm trying! Even if it's just sit and be fit! Lol so proud of you two ladies! Let's do this!

    1. Doing something is better than anyone who is just sitting on the couch! So it counts!! I don't think we should personally attack someone about being unhealthy. I think that would have the opposite effect. But gently encourage them by living it out as an example. I think that is a great way to help anyone. I understand Brian's heart, you just want to help people be the best. I think that's what God is stirring and i'm excited to be on board with it!!

  5. If this means we're not eating cookies at Chick-fil-A anymore, I don't think I'm down.

HAHA! Just kidding! Keep it up; I'll find us a race!

  6. Awesome job, Mallory. I gained 21 pounds since I married Daniel in November, without even realizing it. We both started to work out 2 weeks ago tomorrow. I feel the same way you do. I feel energized and healthy. It clears my head and makes it easier to talk to God for me. I've started the PINK Method, but I absolutely love Livestrong.com. It's free and you can log stuff on there and it gives you a ton of great healthy recipes. Good luck. Keep up the awesome work.

I'll for sure check out the live strong website. I'm really needing good healthy recipes! Share any you have with me! Thanks for reading and commenting! Means a lot to me ;)

  7. Remembering our convos at HOP I was always impressed with how comfortable you were in your own skin, so I totally believe this is not about vanity or just simply wanting to be a size 9. Trim the fat of our lives...I love it! I'm gonna check out those apps too. I started juicing to replace meals, except dinner, but I'm only on day 6. I like it but it doesn't replace working out. Unfortunately, my knee is so bad these days most of the time I'm limping and I can't stand it. Keep posting your runs and progress, the honesty is always an inspiration.

  8. Hey Girl I am proud of you! When I started running I did about 20min a mile now I am down to 15min. The most important thing about running is your shoes, get good shoes your feet will thank you, if you go to a running store they will see how you run to know they right type for your feet. If you dont have good ones then you can cause extra pain to you body and even injuries. Don't give up and fight through tieredness, find your sweet spot, the time when you are at your best to work out, because you will put more into it.

    1. Thanks for the tips! I just tried an evening run vs a morning run. Not sure yet which one I prefer? I have pro's and con's about both. I'll keep trying. Good to hear from you Tina!

    2. My two cents: I'm a night owl anyway, so it doesn't keep me up at night when I run in the evenings. I do like the feeling of having it over with when I run in the mornings, though.

  9. Whoo Hoo for taking the step... You know this topic is near and dear to my heart.
I lived my WHOLE life obese (though no one would think seeing me now)
In some eyes I cheated (gastric bypass) but I dont see it that way. It was a huge decision and it doesnt come with out a price. I have to still watch what I eat, and exercise. My surgery was only a tool in my weight loss journey. I can always go back to the me before if I dont watch what I do.
I am excited for you and will pray and support you all the way. :)
